New Project for Promotion of Small Hydro Power Development in Montenegro

 

In partnership with the Ministry for Economic Development and with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Office Montenegro will begin the implementation of the $1 million Project ‘Power Sector Policy Reform to Promote Small Hydro Power Development in Montenegro’.

The Project Action Plan was officially be signed by H.E. Mr. Branimir Gvozdenović, Minister for Economic Development and Mr. Alexander Avanesov, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative to Montenegro.

The International Workshop on Energy Efficiency in Buildings

‘Energy Efficiency in Buildings - Meeting the requirements of EU directive on energy performance of buildings, status, needs, and possibilities for Montenegro’ was an international workshop organized by the Ministry for Economic Development, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Government of Norway and the Energy Saving International AS (ENSI).

The Ministry for Economic Development has declared a part of 2008 as the Energy Efficiency Year in Montenegro. In compliance with the country’s strategic goal of EU integration, Montenegro will have to meet a number of EU regulations and directives in the area of energy efficiency.  The Norwegian Government through its implementing partner ENSI has began a training and certification program for first national expert-energy auditors in the country.

Alexander Avanesov new Head of UNDP Montenegro

New UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative to Montenegro Mr. Alexander Avanesov handed over the Letter of Accreditation from Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon to President of Montenegro H.E. Mr. Filip Vujanović.

President Vujanović expressed satisfaction at Mr. Avanesov's appointment and uttered his expectations for a quality cooperation between Montenegro and the UNDP.

Perception of Corporate Social Responsibility Concept in Montenegro

Within a project coordinated by the UNDP Regional Bureau in Bratislava, which tackles corporate social responsibility in new EU member countries and countries candidates for EU accession, an assessment of the presence of this concept in large, medium and small enterprises was conducted at the regional level.

In the project segment related to Montenegro the assessment was conducted by the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (CEED) Podgorica, whose representatives held a presentation of the research results and further promoted the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the presence of Montenegrin local and national business associations, local authorities, state institutions, NGOs, media, educational institutions and international organisations. Also, the project implementers, representatives from the UNDP Albania presented the Regional Project on Corporate Social Responsibility. The presentations were followed by brief demonstrations showing examples of CSR among the companies that participated in the research.

Geographic Information System for better forestry management in Montenegro

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Montenegro through its Environmental Geographic Information System (EnvGIS) Project, and together with the Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of Montenegro and the Forestry Directorate of Montenegro marked successful completion of the capacity building training provided for the engineers and specialised staff of the Forestry Directorate.

The certificates and maps of current forest delineation status were handed over to twenty nine people from fifteen Local Forestry Units, who have successfully finished a four weeks course on Information Technology and Geographical Information System. The course was aimed at strengthening capacities of Forestry Sector in order to improve forestry management and to ensure environmental sustainability.

Montenegro Summer School for Young Diplomats ”Gavro Vuković“

Bearing in mind the role of establishing connections both among diplomatic services and young diplomats in the region and between them and their colleagues from the EU countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro supported by the Capacity Development Programme (CDP) organized the first Montenegrin Summer School for Young Diplomats “Gavro Vuković“.  The School was held between 2-6 June, 2008 and participants were young diplomats from the countries of the region and several EU countries, while the lecturers were eminent domestic and foreign practicians and theorists in international politics.

The first Montenegrin Summer School for Young Diplomats was devoted to the challenges for diplomats from countries in the process of European and Euro-Atlantic integrations and provided an excellent opportunity for an exchange of opinions and experiences concerning current issues and processes in the EU and NATO, but also for networking among young diplomats from the region and other countries of the EU.
