First time in independent state

Podgorica, October 24th 2006 – United Nations day was officially celebrated for the first time in independent state of Montenegro last night, in Podgorica-based villa Gorica. The hosts of this celebration were H.E. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Miodrag Vlahović and UNDP Resident Representative ai/UN Interagency Focal Point in Montenegro ai Mr. Garret Tankosić Kelly.

This UN Day is an extraordinary occasion simply because MNE has gone through many ways to become 192nd member state of UN, honoring at the same time many commitments outlined in the Declaration of Human Rights, Mr. Tankosic Kelly said. “Over the past period Montenegro maintained multiethnic society, hosted large number of refugees and displaced persons and it left the state union with Serbia without a single gunshot fired, except maybe at celebrations”, said in joke Mr. Tankosic Kelly. He evaluated that UN activities in Montenegro would not be possible without partners. The first was the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Miodrag Vlahović, as institution and as a person. It is enough to say that the ministry he leads signed the contract with UN on the construction of first UN eco-building in the world, he stated.

Chief of Montenegrin diplomacy, Mr. Miodrag Vlahović reminded that mostly used metaphor for gaining the independence before referendum in Montenegro was Montenegrin flag to flaunt on the East River.  “Today, when it is reality we all are proud of; Montenegro confirms that it is dedicated to those principles, values and ideals which were created by UN in remote 1945. As relatively little state, but as multiethnic, multi-confessional society, which respects all cultures to which Montenegro is home and host, as the state dedicated to good-neighbor cooperation, Montenegro will be directed still towards UN as the greatest world forum that should build a peace, friendship and solidarity among nations and states of modern world”, Mr. Vlahović underlined and bespoke to UN organizations that Montenegro will still be a good host.

Mr. Kelly evaluated that Montenegro has always been a good host to numerous institutions and UN organizations operating in the country. Those are FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) that came recently, IOM (International Organization for Migration established in Montenegro in 2001), UNDP (United Nations Development Programme, 2001), UNHCR (The United Nations Refugee Agency, present in Montenegro since 1992), UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund, 1993) and WHO (World Health Organization, 1998).

Date to remember

United Nations Day was established by Presidential Proclamation to commemorate the establishment of the United Nations in 1945. The name "United Nations" was devised by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt and was first used in the "Declaration by United Nations" of January 1, 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers.
